Our desire is to make these mosaics as affordable as possible. However, the materials are expensive, and the process is labor-intensive (a typical 30" square piece can take up to 24 man-hours to put together, depending upon complexity). Compared with other commissioned artworks, however, our prices are very reasonable. You can see examples of prices for commissions on the Process page. Your actual price will vary due to the unique nature of each mosaic.

Each commission price is agreed upon before work begins. The price of the final work will depend primarily on three factors:

  1. the number of bricks (determined by the size and complexity of the mosaic)
  2. whether any unusual colors are used
  3. special construction methods

As far as size goes, our mosaics come in standardized sizes based on the sizes of the baseplates onto which the bricks are placed. These plates primarily come in two sizes: 10 inches by 10 inches, and 15 inches by 15 inches. These plates are then combined, so that we can make (for example) a 30 inch x 30 inch mosaic, or a 20 inch by 40 inch mosaic, and so forth. Obviously, the larger the mosaic, the more expensive it will be. However, if you require a non-standard size it may be possible to accomodate your request, but at a higher cost.

Images with complex subjects (for example, more than one face) will usually have a higher brick count.

Please see our Process page for an explanation of colors in our mosaics and how price is affected. Certain colors which are more expensive to obtain will raise the price, and blending colors may raise the brick count.

Finally, the construction method will affect the cost. These mosaics are quite stable when put together normally. While hanging on a wall, the individual bricks will not fall out. However, for added durability we can glue the bricks in place. Such a process adds considerable expense and for a large mosaic could nearly double the cost. I usually recommend against glue.

We normally hand-deliver mosaics and help hang them. If we need to ship a mosaic, we use a special construction method which increases stability in transport. This construction method adds around 20% to the cost of the mosaic. Alternatively, if you don't mind doing a little bit of work on the mosaic yourself, we can use our normal construction method and ship the mosaic with a few key pieces removed for added stability. We'd include instructions on replacing those pieces. It's quite easy and adds nothing to your cost.

The general ordering process goes as follows: first, you send one or more photos, either by email or regular mail. We'll design a few mosaics that bring out the most detail. This might involve combining photos, altering the photos (but not your originals, of course), and so forth. We then email you simulated images of what the mosaics would look like with pricing information so that you can decide if any of them are what you would like, or if you would like to see changes or modifications. When we agree on a final design, you'll get a proposed schedule. Although schedules vary due to our workload and the number of bricks in your mosaic, they typically take from 2 to 6 weeks. If you agree, we ask for a 25% downpayment, and we have a very simple commission agreement. The remainder of the payment is due upon delivery if we are hand-delivering the mosaic, or on shipment if otherwise. We normally try to beat our schedules, when possible.
